PRIMARILY YEAR ROUND ACTIVITIES
The City of Durango, Colorado and the rest of the La Plata County area present everyone, visiting guests and local population alike, with the ideal Colorado lifestyle and environment. Situated in Southwest Colorado, the area provides a unique mix of the convenience and diversity of “big city” life with the serenity and appeal of a rural mountain community. Situated between the San Juan and La Plata Mountain ranges, and along the banks of the “river of lost souls” – the Animas River – the City of Durango is a welcoming gateway to your Southwest Colorado vacation. Offering a wide variety of restaurants, galleries, shopping opportunities, cultural activities, and year-round festivals, special events and celebrations, the town has a constant appeal to visitors and to those who call the area their home. As expected, a primary focus for all who come to the area is the outdoor experience and the appreciation of the scenic beauty. Whether you have come in the winter to ski or take part in other winter sports, or the summer to river raft, kayak, mountain bike, hike – the list could go on and on – the Durango area is the perfect location from which to base your vacation events and organize all the details you will need to make your stay memorable, and hopefully, one which fosters a dream of returning to Southwest Colorado. PRIMARILY SUMMER ACTIVITIES
The Durango area offers several opportunities for rafting. The Animas River and The San Juan River both have a strong early summer season ideal for rafting and canoeing. There are several rafting companies located in Durango and some will rent inner tubes, rafts and canoes.
Explore the back country by taking a jeep tour. We personally recommend an all day tour (if you really want to see Colorado). The jeep tours can take you to any number of places, including long abandoned mining ghost towns and mines. You will have great opportunity to take in unparalleld panoramic views, waterfalls and probably even wildlife!
The Summer train winds through the San Juan mountains to take you to the historic mining town of Silverton Colorado. Located at over 9000 feet, Silverton is nestled in a valley surrounded by 12,000 ft and higher mountain peaks. Explore the shops, take in some lunch, and soak in the gorgeous views. The summer train usually runs starting the second weekend in May through the last weekend in October.
